The idea came to me in an Art Gallery in Glasgow. I saw paintings which used well known British consumables as their subject. These articles are so famous or popular that they have become icons in their own right, they were pictured autonomously, without any connection or context of their place of origin. In my photographs, I wanted to associate the products with their city of origin, giving them provenance and place. The series then developed to include other cities and their respective icons: Venice/masks, Rome/pasta, Milan/fashion, Frankfurt/Beer, and so on.
